The London Fire Brigade said the fire was reported at 1.22am.

They added: “Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire in a flat in Leather Gardens, Stratford.

“A flat on the 17th floor is alight.

“The Brigade was called at 0122. Fire engines from Stratford, Plaistow, Leyton, East Ham, Bethnal Green and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

“The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”

A video emerged on social media showing horrifying flames in the high-rise building.

People in the area took to Twitter to display their concerns about the fire.

One wrote: “Tower block in Stratford is on fire, literally right behind my house!

“I really hope no one is hurt.”

Another posted: “Oh God, there’s a fire in one of the high rise buildings in front of my house…”

At 2.50am the London Fire Brigade told Express.co.uk that the fire has now been “dealt with”.

They said: “We have dealt with the fire now, the fire is now out.

“We are just finishing off there now.”

The service added that it “doesn’t look like anybody was involved”.

The flat was destroyed by the fire and roughly 100 people left the building before firefighters arrived.
